For a brief moment in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon, it appeared the Capilano Blues would complete a late comeback at Langara but in the end, the home side converted on a pair of late possessions to secure a 74-73 win.
A pair of makes at the free throw line by Alfonso Reyes put CapU ahead 70-69 with three minutes to go after the Blues began the final frame down by six. But a Patrick Robinson layup on the Falcons’ next possession plus a three-pointer from Aaron Ungprasert with just over a minute to go gave the home side the room they needed to bring home the win.
Capilano struggled to score coming out of halftime, getting just two buckets plus some makes at the charity stripe in a third quarter that saw them accumulate just nine points.
Peter Li led the Blues’ charge in the final frame, hitting four of his eight threes on the night but the sluggish third quarter, plus a slow start out of opening tipoff spelled defeat for the visitors.
A couple of areas that could have tipped things in the Blues’ favour Saturday were free-throw shooting (12-of-21 as a team) and bench scoring where Reyes was the only reserve to get on the scoresheet with eight points.
The Blues best stretch of the game was the second quarter when Li hit three triples while Kash Lang was 4-of-4 for eight of his 14 on the afternoon. Zach Klim fouled out late in another development that hurt the Capilano’s comeback odds. The 6-foot-11 forward finished with 16 points.
Capilano heads to Vancouver Island University for road games Nov. 14 and 15 at the Mariners’ gym.
