Abby Betker and Nnya Mbaoma reached double-digits in kills both nights while rookie setter Kennedy Hamilton-Jackson showed she’s ready to be a contributor for the Capilano Blues in a two-win weekend at Douglas College to open the PACWEST season.
Friday’s match was the first of the season for the Blues while Douglas had split their opening weekend at Camosun. CapU used setters Mollie English and Hamilton-Jackson Friday with the latter quickly getting into the rhythm, allowing the Blues hitters to put away kills.
Capilano dropped the opening set but then won the next two with Betker doing plenty of damage from her outside hitter spot on her way to 17 kills on the night. The home side squeezed out the fourth set 25-23 setting up a deciding fifth frame that went to extra points. Tied at 15 in the fifth, Capilano dug in, with two kills from Betker sealing the deal.
Saturday’s rematch saw the teams split the first two sets but Capilano was all business to close things out, winning the fourth and fifth sets by 11 and six points respectively.
Mbaoma led Saturday’s attackers with 14 kills while second-year libero Monica Hoffman covered the court, collecting eight digs for a total of 20 on the weekend.
At the net, Capilano got wonderful performances from middle blocker Anna Liniewski who recorded four stuffs and right side Annika Kuznik who defended well above her 5-foot-8 height as she chalked up six blocks on the weekend.
The Blues have a bye for the Oct. 31-Nov. 1 weekend and return to action with their home opening weekend Nov. 7 and 8 with Camosun College visiting the North Vancouver campus.
