The Capilano Blues started off their final home weekend of 2025 getting contributions from across their lineup in a tidy 3-0 win (set scores: 25-22, 25-17, 25-16) Friday night over the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats.
Despite their 1-7 mark coming into the weekend, the Bearcats were a scrappy bunch and hung with the nationally No. 2-ranked Blues early as the teams traded points, with neither side going on an extended run of serves.
Capilano forced a CBC timeout going up 14-10, but the visitors replied after talking things over with Makayla Friesen notching one of her two aces on the evening.
The Blues got a bit of separation with a mini run of serves from Addison Keatin,g but again CBC clawed back to within three. When in doubt, Capilano went back to the big right arm of Nnya Mbaoma and teed her up for eight of her 14 kills on the night in the opening set.
There was more point swapping early in the second set, and Capilano didn’t get much separation until a pair of Mbaoma aces to get up 13-9. At 16-11, CBC called another timeout, but the Blues had a big moment shortly after with an emphatic stuff by Anna Liniewski after a long rally.
A 6-0 Capilano start to the third set signalled that the home side wasn’t interested in a long night. Rookie middle blocker Quinn Laird played a big part in the final frame, with two big stuffs, including a tandem effort with Abby Betker.
Natalie Rourke went on a six-serve run in the third set, which contained three aces, to put the Blues basically out of reach as the score got to 17-6. Setter Alix Schewaga also totalled three aces on the night.
Capilano put things away with Mbaoma at the service line and used the minimum sets to improve to 7-0 on the campaign. The Blues did not call a timeout throughout the match, while CBC used both of theirs in each set.
The teams play again Saturday at CapU in a 5 p.m. start.
