The Capilano University Blues wrapped up their weekend homestand in North Vancouver with an identical 67–53 victory over the Camosun College Chargers on Saturday, completing a two-game sweep and improving to 3–1 on the season. After a tightly contested first quarter, Capilano seized momentum with a dominant second period and never relinquished control.
Camosun held a narrow 15–14 edge after the opening frame, but the Blues took over in the second quarter, holding the Chargers to just four points while building a 28–19 halftime lead. Capilano continued to apply pressure coming out of the break, outscoring Camosun 23–16 in the third to push the margin into double digits. Although the Chargers made a late push in the fourth, the early damage proved decisive.
Forward Barcha Hnizdilova powered the Blues with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting, adding seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists in an all-around standout performance. Madeleine Coffin was again a force inside, tallying 16 points and nine rebounds while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Mia Parkin recorded a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, contributing to Capilano’s advantage on the glass and in ball movement. Lauren Tomlinson added five points and a team-best four steals.
Defensively, Capilano set the tone. The Blues held Camosun to 29.2% shooting from the field and just 6.9% from beyond the arc (2-for-29). Their defensive pressure generated 23 turnovers, which they converted into 17 points. Capilano also led 14–6 in assists and collected 16 second-chance points, despite being narrowly outrebounded 42–39.
Off the bench, Alanna Schieman paced the reserves with six points, helping steady the group when called upon during her 18 minutes of court time. While ten Blues saw the floor, Capilano leaned more heavily on its core group than the night before — five players logged 20+ minutes, and three surpassed the 30-minute mark — as the starters carried the bulk of the workload.
Weekend Standouts
Capilano’s trio of Barcha Hnizdilova, Madeleine Coffin, and Mia Parkin set the tone across both wins. Hnizdilova led all Blues scorers for the weekend with 33 points and 17 rebounds, highlighted by her 21-point performance in Saturday’s rematch. Coffin was a steady force inside, totalling 29 points and 20 rebounds while shooting 91% from the free-throw line (11-of-12).
Parkin delivered perhaps the most complete weekend of all, combining for 22 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists, and 8 steals as she impacted the game on both ends. Together, the trio averaged 42 points and 26.5 rebounds per game, powering the Blues to a clean weekend sweep.
Looking Forward
With the 67–53 victory, Capilano improves to 3–1 and carries momentum into its next test: a road matchup against the Langara Falcons on Thursday at 6 p.m.
