CapU Blues sports info
Down two sets to none Saturday in what looked like a quick path to a split weekend at Camosun College, the Capilano Blues staged a rally and almost came all the way back, winning the next two sets before dropping the deciding fifth by two points.
The Blues won in straight sets Friday, though two sets went deep into extra points (set scores of 28-26, 25-21, 32-30). Luke Tiegen provided the bulk of the Blues offence on the night with 13 kills and a season-high four aces. Xavier Masztak made his presence felt by getting in on three blocks and providing a team-high nine digs.
On Saturday, the home side Chargers had a response ready and took the first two sets before Capilano made a stand, ultimately falling in five sets (set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 16-25, 15-13). Tiegen went off for 17 kills Saturday while Quentin Middleton was productive from his middle blocker spot with eight kills and two aces while registering four stuff blocks. Reese Nowotny was also a factor Saturday with three aces and two blocks.
The results put the Blues record at 9-9, the same as Douglas College. Camosun is 8-10 and finish their regular season with a pair of games at Douglas Feb. 13 and 14. The Blues hold the tie-breaker with Camosun by virtue of more sets won in head-to-head play. Douglas holds the tie-breaker over Capilano with more sets won head to head.
The top-four teams in the PACWEST standings make the playoffs, so next weekend's results will be huge. Capilano hosts College of the Rockies to conclude the regular season Feb. 13-14.
