The Capilano Blues played a hard-fought match in their home opener against the Langara College Falcons, but ultimately fell short with a final score of 1-0.
Falcons player Melina Glavas scored the game’s only goal in the 15th minute of the first half.
Capilano’s captains Lauren Grey and Kai Belbin led and facilitated the teams’ efforts from the get-go. With Grey stepping back out onto the pitch having not played for all of last season, and Belbin having scored her first-ever goal as a Blue in Saturday’s away match against the Falcons in their season opener.
On Sunday, much of the first half was spent on the Blues side of the pitch, but the second half showcased an aggressive push by Capilano into Langara's turf. Rookie Katelyn Kendall was noticeable in her first home game and put multiple second shots on goal in the second half. In a similar fashion, first-year forward Kianna Sardari, who substituted in the second half, had an impressive rush down the right side of the pitch as well as a shot attempt in the 46th minute.
Defender Isabella Bolognese and midfielder Sophie Pather were both aggressive in their playstyle for the full match. Capilano goalkeeper Rachel Laakmann tallied a total of 11 saves for the game, limiting the Falcons' scoring capability.
Though not the outcome the Blues were hoping for, Lillooet Park was filled with friends, family and fellow student-athletes from kick-off in support of the team's home opener, cheering on heavily from the sidelines.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the Blues are back at home on Sept.13 against the Vancouver Island University Mariners at 1 p.m., then travel to play the Douglas College Royals on Sept. 14 at 12 p.m.
