The Blues women's volleyball team carried their momentum from Friday night's victory into Saturday's afternoon rematch against the Camosun College Chargers, winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-20 and 25-18). The Blues were even more dominant than in Friday night's match as they won in straight sets and won every set by at least 5 points. After being upset by the Chargers in last season's PACWEST Provincial semifinals, the Blues were determined to flip the script and secure the two wins at home this weekend.
Facing a Camosun side led by last year's All-Canadian standout Erica Bolink, Capilano showed early why expectations are sky-high this season. The undefeated Blues have a very experienced lineup this year, with many graduating players anchoring a group that is very eager to make a deep PACWEST playoff push. Practices for the Blues have been competitive and very disciplined so far this year, which is already showing in the early-season results for the Blues.
Monica Hoffman has taken on a new role this year as starting libero, and she has been very steady. Saturday, she effectively demonstrated why she deserves the starting spot by keeping the Blues in long rallies and showcasing her important energy both on and off the court. Nnya Mbaoma has continued her success from last year, combining strong defensive reads and dominating on the attack. She finished with 9 kills and 2 aces. Abby Betker also stood out with a complete performance in all categories, getting 8 kills, 1 block and clutch from the service line, getting 4 aces. Second-year setter Mollie English has also continued to look composed; she has done a fantastic job of quarterbacking this team, feeding easy-to-hit sets all over the floor.
Camosun began to find its footing in the third set, pushing back more aggressively and improving its defence. Still, the Blues stayed composed and stuck to their game plan, keeping steady pressure on the Chargers and refusing to let the momentum shift for long stretches. The Blues were able to take control of the game, which allowed head coach Sue Soolsma to give newer players valuable court time and experience. The Blues closed the game out with 4 aces from 5th-year returning player Anna Liniewski, 3 of those coming in a row to close the game out.
With another confident and well-rounded team effort, the Blues closed out the match in straight sets. The group will look to carry their strong performance into next weekend's highly anticipated matchup against the 6–0 Vancouver Island University Mariners. A weekend of games you won't want to miss!
Come out and support your Blues next Friday, November 14, at 6 p.m. against the Mariners.
