Missing players due to injury and card accumulation in their final two regular season games, the Capilano Blues managed to do what was necessary to clinch a spot in the PACWEST provincials.
The Blues earned a nil-nil draw Saturday at CapU Squamish against Vancouver Island University (VIU) with keeper Graydon Sherle making several nimble saves to record his second clean sheet of the season. VIU was the team the Blues were trying to hold off for the final playoff spot and the tie on Saturday kept them at arm’s length. Both teams would go on to drop their season finales, keeping CapU in third place.
CapU was without rookie forward Zach Gabrys, and his three goals on the campaign, on Saturday due to card accumulation.
Several Blues were playing with two yellow cards Saturday and four of them – Andrew Cerqueira, Stefano Dal Sasso, Sebastian Cirotto and Aiden Adams – each picked up another in the VIU game, meaning they’d have to sit the Sunday game at Langara in the last game of the season.
Dressing just 17 players for at Langara, Capilano was unable to muster a goal and dropped a 1-0 decision to the first-place Falcons. VIU was defeated 4-1 by Douglas on Sunday meaning they gained no ground and end the season out of the playoff picture.
As the No. 3 seed for the PACWEST provincial tournament, Capilano will take on Douglas in the semifinal which goes Saturday, Oct. 25.
Capilano is the host side for the tournament with all games being held at the CapU Squamish turf field.
