The Capilano Blues got some impressive individual performances both games on their Jan. 23-24 road trip to Camosun College but unfortunately none were enough to overcome a strong and balanced Chargers squad that took both ends of the weekend.
Making just his third start of the season at point guard, Afu Bullock responded with a team-high 18 points Friday but a sluggish first quarter cost the Blues in an 83-66 loss. In Saturday's rematch, Kash Lang went for 29 - his second-highest point total of the season - while Josh Vandevelde led Capilano with nine rebounds but Camosun shot the ball well, topping 20 points each frame on the way to a 100-83 outcome.
The results move the Blues' record to 10-6 and they remain third in the PACWEST standings.
In Friday's opener, despite the first-quarter doldrums, Capilano remained within striking distance throughout the game but they never led after a Chargers three from Cormick Brown six minutes into the opening frame. Trailing by nine after the third quarter, the Blues couldn't summon the surge needed to make a comeback and had just three makes from the field over the final 10 minutes.
On Saturday, Lang notched 11 in the first quarter and Zach Klim scored nine of his 14 in the second but again, the Chargers always seemed to have an answer and did enough to keep their lead, holding a 52-46 advantage at half time. North Vancouver product David Finch had 13 of his 20 for Camosun in the first half and after the break, it was Thomas Beames with 12 in the third and Brown sealed the deal with four threes over the final 10 minutes.
The three-ball was an issue all weekend for the Blues; they couldn't seem to find good looks from beyond the arc Saturday, making just 4-of-17 attempts while Camosun hit on 14-of-32. Saturday's game also marked the first time all season Blues forward Zach Hamed did not attempt a three; he went 1-for-3 from downtown Friday after going 5-for-11 the weekend prior against Okanagan College.
Capilano returns home to host Vancouver Island University Jan. 30 and 31. Start times are 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
