After her first season with the Capilano Blues, Maddy Coffin had participated in only 12 games and came off the bench in each of them on her way to a modest 3.4 points per game average.

It was not exactly the makings of a career that now sees her at the top of the Blues all-time scoring list, but the North Vancouver native and Seycove Secondary graduate surpassed Carmelle M'Bikata Feb. 20 at Langara College when she made a bucket late in the first half to give her 1,164 career points on the way to an eventual 20-point outing in a 58-57 loss to the Falcons.

"Really, it's amazing; I'm super happy about it," said Coffin after Saturday's season finale, where she added 22 more points to wrap her Blues career with 1,196 points. "I wouldn't be able to break that record if it's not for great passing, great assists and great... things that aren't put down on the stat sheet. So it's really the whole team effort."

That may be true, but Coffin was the one who worked on her game and became a go-to option in the Blues offence. Always blessed with a soft touch around the rim, she added a reliable mid-range aspect to her game, consistently knocking down baseline jumpers. She extended her range and, after not hitting a three in her first two seasons, began knocking them down with regularity in her third year. This season, she's made a career-best 24 from beyond the arc and also has improved from the free throw line where she scored 100 points this year alone.

Looking back to her rookie season in 2021, even getting onto the Blues roster was something of a surprise as Coffin had been initially offered only a redshirt spot with the team.

"Coming out of high school... it was really (Capilano) or nothing else; I didn't have any offers coming out of high school," says Coffin. "It was the COVID year, I didn't have any game tape."

Coffin's background with Blues head coach Chris Weimer is what earned her the chance with the Blues. She had participated in his basketball academy since her elementary school days and felt good about coming to Capilano.

Her commitment, on and off the court, took care of the rest. Now into the final act of her collegiate career, Coffin is a 2024 PACWEST All-Star, a 2025 PACWEST Tournament All-Star, a three-time PACWEST Academic Excellence Award winner, a three-time CCAA National Scholar and a two-time CCAA Academic All-Canadian.

All that's missing is a trip to the CCAA National Championship. Coffin and her teammates have the chance to book their spot when they get going at the PACWEST Provincial Championship March 5 to 7 at Camosun College.
